NEW YORK -- Alex Rivera's debut novel "Shadows Over Eden" will publish Oct. 15 by HarperCollins, following a competitive six-figure auction among publishers. The book, set in a decaying mining town, draws on Rivera's upbringing in rural West Virginia. Early reviews from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly praise its tense pacing and authentic dialogue.

The 320-page hardcover stems from Rivera's short story that won the 2023 Bridport Prize. Rivera spent three years revising the manuscript with input from writing workshops at Iowa. Industry scouts note the novel's timely themes of community fracture amid economic decline.

"Writing this felt like excavating my own family's buried stories—ones we never talked about at the dinner table," said Rivera, a former journalist. "I hope it sparks conversations about what we choose to remember in small towns like mine."

Pre-orders have topped 25,000 copies through Amazon and independent bookstores, with Barnes & Noble selecting it for its October Discover Great New Writers program. Audio rights sold to Audible, narrated by the author.

The book will be available in hardcover ($28), ebook ($14.99) and audiobook formats via major retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Bookshop.org. Rivera appears at the Miami Book Fair Nov. 17.
